Product Photography Service

The Commercial Art Lab will photograph your jewelry, antiques or other products for print, catalog, web, email or advertising. We shoot both still-life and on models. All shoots must be scheduled, even if your needs are urgent please call or email and we will accommodate you. Photography is done in studio or (for an additional fee) can be scheduled for your location.

Pricing:

Catalog style, still-life photography on a white background ranges in price between $35 and $75 per image. Turntable product videos start at $120 per video. Please call or email the studio to get a price quote for your particular project.

Instructions for Your Appointment:

Once your appointment has been set, you will receive a confirmation email indicating your time and shoot-location. Please be sure to arrive on-time. If you must cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance so we can have a chance to schedule another client in your time slot. For larger shoots of one or more days, a 50% non-refundable deposit may be requested.

We typically clean everything before each shoot which will remove grease, fingerprints and water stains. We are unable to remove polishing fibers which frequently get trapped under prongs; if this is the case, you will need to take the piece back and remove the fibers. If there are any items with special cleaning instructions, please inform us before the shoot. We use mild soap, water, a soft brush and denatured alcohol. Emeralds, opals, turquoise, pearls and mother of pearl are never cleaned.

Downloading your images and videos:

Typical turn around time is 2 to 3 days after the shoot. If you have an urgent need, please advise the studio manager prior to the shoot; a rush fee may be charged depending on the job size and required delivery time. We use the WeTransfer service to deliver your creative work. You will get an email from WeTransfer which contains a link to download your files. If this is your first time using WeTransfer you will be asked to agree to some terms and conditions (they won’t harvest your data), click agree when you are presented with the following screen:

The next screen will give you some download options:

Click the download button to download all the files at once, note that the actual download will be a zip file which you will need to extract when the download is complete. If you are on a phone, you probably will not be able to extract the zip file so you’ll want to click the magnifying glass to the right. Once you click the magnifying glass you’ll be presented with the list of files and you’ll be able to download them individually.

The WeTransfer link will eventually stop working after a month or two — once our space quota is full we must delete old files. However, we maintain a gallery of your images and videos which will remain as long as you are an active client. We will email you with a link to your gallery after your shoot (it will look something like https://chadjohnsonphotography.zenfolio.com/yourcompanyname).

Within a zenfolio gallery you may download all the images at once, a subset of selected images, or just a single image. Click the “select photos” button in the upper right hand corner of the page:

Then either choose “All” in the upper left hand corner or select by hand the individual photos you would like to download:

Once you have made your selection, click “download” on the button in the upper right hand corner of the page:

Using your images:

By default, we deliver your images as jpegs in the full resolution at which they were shot (ie. what the camera produced) and we don’t downsize them unless you specifically request it. Some websites like squarespace have a maximum pixel dimension so the files would need to be downsized for use on such sites. These jpegs also contain so-called “clipping paths” which your graphic designer can use if he or she needs a transparent background, for example in a catalog layout. For a small fee we can also deliver layered TIFF or PSD files which gives your graphic designer the ability to make adjustments to our retouching.

Using your videos:

The videos we produce are very high quality and can be used in your video projects or shown standalone. The file sizes are quite large and need to be shared via a streaming service like vimeo or youtube — they can not be sent as an email attachment. For a small fee we can deliver a small, low resolution video alongside the standard, high resolution video.
